Artist of the Week: Matthew Orders
Illyana Rasputin, a.k.a. Magik
Bobby Drake: I’m just a lost gay trying to navigate through a capitalist society.
Kitty Pryde: We never got any Glee bloopers, huh?
Illyana Rasputin: Sure we did, 121 episodes worth of them.
Bobby Drake: Shots fucking fired.
Thanks to N’astirh’s deception, Magik is tricked into cracking open the demon portal between Manhattan and Limbo. What was once a series of demonic incidences of possessed fire escapes and telescopes is about to turn into a full-fledged, end of days, demon invasion. This is absolutely the worst possible outcome of the whole Limbo conflict, and all of this blood is on the New Mutants’ and the X-Men’s hands as they’ve constantly been too busy to properly deal with the situation. Illyana was often left to deal with maintaining control of the demon realm with absolutely no support from her mentors or peers as if her failure would not result the mass extinction of the human species. And now look what’s happening!!! It is RAINING demons. That’s worse than raining white privileged men. Or Republicans. <shudder>. Ok it’s not that bad. (New Mutants #71 – Jan 1989)
Come on this shit is so bad assed. Look at this artwork. Look at what’s going on here. How did I miss out on all these New Mutant comics back when I was reading X-Men as a kid. (New Mutants #71 – Jan 1989)

Magik makes a deal with the Harry Potter robe wearing devil, agreeing to retrieve her soul sword from S’ym in return for safe passage back to Earth. What could go wrong!? You know, ignoring the whole creepy, bestial, “love” angle that’s going on here for a moment, when N’astirh is in supervillain plotting mode, he’s just gotta be wearing that ballin’ plotting robe of his (we’ve never seen him wear any clothes whatsoever up to this point). Because that’s just how a shaft faced demon rolls and I respect that. (New Mutants #71 – Jan 1989)
Welp here’s a scene where a little girl gets the shit beat out of her by a terrifying demon. They really don’t leave anything to the imagination with this. He knocks her down and then brutally beats her. At least there’s no insinuation of sexual assault to go along with it…
Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to announce my retirement from this blog and my comic book hobby. It was fun while it lasted! (New Mutants #71 – Jan 1989)
Here we get a dark and deranged recap of the Magik mini-series (which you can read my summaries of here and outside the Tumblr app in chronological order here), complete with Illyana’s horrifying story of child abduction by demons and the decayed skull of Kitty Pryde that still has chunks of hair attached to it. That was by far the darkest and most nightmarish X-Men story I’ve read yet. It’s like a true horror movie, taking the elements from Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz that scared the shit out of me the most when I was a kid and giving them the full, unapologetic, horror / Excorcist treatment. I don’t imagine we’re going to get many more New Mutants “horror” movies with the impending Fox / Disney merger, but this would have been a cool one to explore. (New Mutants #71 – Jan 1989)
