New Mutants: Dead Souls aka Illyana and Her Terrible Leadership Skills
This is my domain. I’m the only one who can stop her.
From here we’re heading straight into Inferno. The demon realm of Limbo has been threatening to burst and spill into our dimension for ages now, and we’ve all been procrastinating our ASSES off about dealing with it. You guys should have taken care of this problem ages ago!! See, this is basically what it looks like underneath my refrigerator since I haven’t cleaned under there since I bought my house 15 years ago. When I look under there, I can see eyeballs staring back at me. There’s a scorching case of conflagration going on under there. (New Mutants #70 – Dec 1988)
This is the final issue of the Prelude to Inferno omnibus, excluding some bonus material at the end of the book, and it’s the final issue before we start Inferno proper. I haven’t been doing any reviews for these books as I’ve been going, but I plan on doing a big review for everything after I finish Inferno that covers everything I’ve read since the first issue of X-Factor. This, in my mind, encapsulates Jean Grey’s resurrection and all of the consequences that were caused by that event. (New Mutants #70 – Dec 1988) Happy holidays 1988!!!
Ok, while all this other Limbo drama is going on, we’re still dealing with this space spider storyline and this obnoxious Gosamyr chick. It turns out Gosamyr is part of some weird, parasitic, alien mind control species, and even though she looks all fragile and pretty, if the beings from her race aren’t allowed to gestate properly they turn into hideous, planet-eating, slug beasts. But they aren’t actually evil, they are just childlike. Or something. I wasn’t really paying very much attention. Here Illyana slashes Gosamyr with her soul sword and we can see her true nature. (New Mutants #69 – Nov 1988)
See ya, villains! Don’t do anything in Limbo, I wouldn’t do! And watch out for demons!
During her last stop in Limbo, Illyana retreated just as the hell dimension was completely engulfed with demons, and she withdrew her soul sword as she did so. Now she’s using it out in space and everything she slices with it gets corrupted into a Limbo demon. Not really sure what any of this means. To be honest I can’t keep track of any of this shit. (New Mutants #69 – Nov 1988)
Bad-assed New Mutants teleportation splash page. (New Mutants #69 – Nov 1988)
WHAT IF… Magik?
